What a show- ranks higher than quite a few i saw when Garcia was alive, ( 100 or so times between 19) Good for Mickey and Billy for moving on it's high time they all did. It's essentially unauthentic, and it makes me sad that Phil and Bobby are so attached to the idea of playing Dead shows that they'll hire an imitator without the creative spark that made the Dead's music, by chance, extraordinary. Jerry couldn't help but sound like Jerry. So, despite his thorough mastery of many, if not most, of Garcia's sounds, he uses them randomly and impersonally. Nevertheless, he's playing "Jerry Garcia", not just playing music. I listen to this guy playing the same notes, the same tones, the same licks and rhythms as Garcia, and think, "What a shame, this doesn't sound good." Frankly, Kadlecik does a better job than anyone else I've heard at playing Jerry Garcia. When I listened to Garcia play, it was listening to inspiration. This guy sounds like he's trying, that really comes through in the sound. There's a reason Jerry picked which notes to sustain, where to play certain things on the fretboard, which notes to play staccato.
Jerry could improvise the same notes in the same octave in 3 or 4 places on the fretboard depending on what sound he was compelled to use, he varied his picking, all aspects of his sound, more than any other guitarist I can think of.
There's too little variation in it for it to be interesting for hours the same way Jerry's was. I left during Morning Dew because I'd had enough of Kadlecik's playing. Doesn't it sound that way to anyone else? Throughout the show, despite my strong desire to like the music, little of the music was enjoyable. Kadlecik sounds like he's trying to play someone else's music. Alright, I'm not expecting Jerry up there, but I wasn't satisfied with this show, for the same sonic reasons I haven't been satisfied with any of the Furthur shows I've attended.
